About the Area

Welcome to Hatteras Island on the beautiful Outer Banks of North Carolina! The island is full of history and tradition, bordered by beautiful, uncrowded beaches, decorated with wildlife, and far from any hectic lifestyle. Hatteras Island is the perfect place to kick off your shoes, relax and enjoy quality time with the most important people in your life.

As a general rule, you will find the locals to be friendly and gracious hosts. We encourage you to visit their businesses. Take advantage of opportunities to sample local cuisine (the freshest seafood you may ever eat), learn about our heritage, enjoy the fun activities that can only be found on an island, and take home a souvenir or two of what we hope will be your most memorable vacation yet!

Hatteras Village
is the southernmost village on Hatteras Island. This village is probably best-known for its world-famous offshore fishing fleet. At several marinas, including Hatteras Landing, Teach's Lair Marina, Hatteras Harbor Marina and Oden's Dock, headboats and charter boats are available to take visitors fishing in the sound, inlet or even the beautiful blue waters of the Gulf Stream. Each afternoon, crowds gather at the docks to watch the boats and tired but happy fishermen unload their catch of the day. Scuba diving charters for exploring the many shipwrecks off our coast are also available, as well as parasailing and dolphin tours. For a great Outer Banks diving experience join Outer Banks Diving on the Bayou Runner and Dolphin.

Cape Hatteras Lighthouse
Buxton 252.995.2274
Located in the village of Buxton, the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is the tallest brick Lighthouse in the U.S., standing at 208 feet tall. The present lighthouse was built in 1870 and still serves the purpose of warning sailors of the treacherous Diamond Shoals. In 1999, the lighthouse made a historic move inland, farther out of the reach of the ever-encroaching Atlantic. The lighthouse keeper's quarters serves as a museum and gift shop. The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse opens for climbing on the Friday before Easter Sunday and closes for the season on Columbus Day each year.

Hatteras Tours offers visitors sightseeing/historical tours of Hatteras, Ocracoke and Roanoke Islands. You can choose from several tours all offered by local historian and author Danny Couch, a lifelong resident of Hatteras Island.
